Three Days

Three Days

Blue Letter Bible Harmony of the Gospels

A. 3 PM to sunset Friday ~ day 1

His death was at 3 PM on the Friday the 6th day.

B. Friday to sunset Saturday ~ day 2
He is buried and in the grave.

C. Sunset Saturday onward ~ day 3
The resurrection: The tomb is discovered empty on early on the first day of the week.

Matthew 28:1-10
Mark 16:1-11
Luke 24:1-12
John 20:1-18

The question is how much of a day is a day? If you arrive at your hotel at 3 PM on Friday and depart at 7:30 on Sunday were you there 3 days? Were you there for 72 hours? No. Where you there on three days? Yes.  Saturday, the seventh day, had ended at sunset. Sunday had begun then. By the coming of the dawn (
Matthew 28:1-10) the third day was half over. We do not know exactly the time that Christ rose from the dead on the third day. Unless he had risen before sunset on Saturday, the seventh and last day of the week, he was definitely in the grave on Friday, on Saturday and on Sunday, the 6th, the 7th and the 1st day.
