It is appointed...

It is appointed...

So quick to blame
So slow to forgive.
Is life a game
Or will I truly live

Beyond the day
Appointed for all?
When breath gives way
Will I hear Him call?

Have I lived my life
Listening to me?
Or have I heard Christ’s words

And in them been made free?

Free from concern

Should I fail or succeed?

Will I look to the Lord

Praying for others in need?
Praying God their Creator,

Who made all that there is,

That Christ would save them

From the abyss.

May do for a while

When I was a child, I spoke like a child, thought like a child, and reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up my childish ways. Now we see from a distance a dim image  Soon we will be up close and personal, face-to-face and eye to eye, fully knowing and fully known, loving and beloved.

Now these three remain, faith, hope, love,  of which the greatest is love.  (1Co 13:11-13)

And inasmuch as it is appointed unto men once to die, and after this cometh judgment; so Christ also, having been once offered to bear the sins of many, shall appear a second time, apart from sin, to them that wait for him, unto salvation. Hebrews 9:27-28

It's a WE thing ~Two or Three or Thirty seven thousand four hundred

2Chronicles 714-15

...if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.  Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayer that is made in this place.

This blog article was inspired as I listened to Gene Baily interview Todd Smith. Here are the links to that interview:

INTERVIEW PART TWO

Thanks to Todd Smith for noting that it is people, PLURAL, not only Solomon, not only you, or I, to whom the Lord is speaking. God is asking the people to "humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways." And the Lord promises to listen to THEIR prayer "that is made in this place." The place was the Temple that Solomon had built.

2Chronicles 714-15

...if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.  Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayer that is made in this place.

I believe today it is no longer one specific Temple or sanctuary that is important, although the Temple Mount in Jerusalem might be considered. But it is any place where God's PEOPLE, are gathered TOGETHER. We His church are His Temple! I have been encouraged for over 47 years to spend time alone with The Lord in prayer each day. And to send time with His people once each week. And it is right to do both. But what Todd Smith notes most emphatically is that we must come with the preeminent purpose of seeking His face corporately. Then we will experience the manifest presence of God. We are the Temple of the Holy Spirit. God desires to come into us, His Temple
both to be loved by us and to love us...
... up close and corporately.

Ch. 6 of Second Chronicles is the record of the prayer for the dedication of the temple Solomon built. Solomon prays to God a very powerful prayer. "...he knelt on his knees in the presence of all the assembly of Israel, and spread out his hands toward heaven, and said..."

Let His Temple humble themselves and pray and seek God's face and stop sinning.

Here is a part of Solomon's prayer with notes in bracketed italics:

2Chronicles 6:12-21 Then Solomon stood before the altar of the LORD in the presence of all the assembly [a corporate gathering] of Israel and spread out his hands. 13 Solomon had made a bronze platform five cubits long, five cubits wide, and three cubits high, and had set it in the court, and he stood on it. Then he knelt on his knees in the presence of all the assembly of Israel [showed his attitude toward God to the assembly], and spread out his hands toward heaven, 14 and said, “O LORD, God of Israel, there is no God like you, in heaven or on earth, keeping covenant and showing steadfast love to your servants who walk before you with all their heart, 15 who have kept with your servant David my father what you declared to him. You spoke with your mouth, and with your hand have fulfilled it this day. 16 Now therefore, O LORD, God of Israel, keep for your servant David my father what you have promised him, saying, ‘You shall not lack a man to sit before me on the throne of Israel, if only your sons pay close attention to their way, to walk in my law as you have walked before me.’ 17 Now therefore, O LORD, God of Israel, let your word be confirmed, which you have spoken to your servant David. 18 “But will God indeed dwell with man on the earth? Behold, heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain you, how much less this house that I have built!  19 Yet have regard to the prayer of your servant and to his plea, O LORD my God, listening to the cry and to the prayer that your servant prays before you, 20 that your eyes may be open day and night toward this house, the place where you have promised to set your name, that you may listen to the prayer that your servant offers toward this place. 21 And listen to the pleas of your servant and of your people Israel, when they pray toward this place. And listen from heaven your dwelling place, and when you hear, forgive.

When Solomon finished praying here is what happened:

2Chronicles 7:1-2 As soon as Solomon finished his prayer, fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices, and the glory of the LORD filled the temple. 2 And the priests could not enter the house of the LORD, because the glory of the LORD filled the LORD's house.

That was the manifest presence of God! And when they were able to continue here is what they did:

2Chronicles 7:4-8 Then the king and all the people offered sacrifice before the LORD. 5 King Solomon offered as a sacrifice 22,000 oxen and 120,000 sheep. So the king and all the people dedicated the house of God. 6 The priests stood at their posts; the Levites also, with the instruments for music to the LORD that King David had made for giving thanks to the LORD—for his steadfast love endures forever—whenever David offered praises by their ministry; opposite them the priests sounded trumpets, and all Israel stood. 7 And Solomon consecrated the middle of the court that was before the house of the LORD, for there he offered the burnt offering and the fat of the peace offerings, because the bronze altar Solomon had made could not hold the burnt offering and the grain offering and the fat. 8 At that time Solomon held the feast for seven days, and all Israel with him, a very great assembly, from Lebo-hamath to the Brook of Egypt.

Note the massive sacrifices offered. Note that “all Israel [was] with him, a very great assembly.” This was a very special event. It was a “corporate” event a NATIONAL event.

Next:

2Chronicles 7:10-11 On the twenty-third day of the seventh month he sent the people away to their homes, joyful and glad of heart for the prosperity that the LORD had granted to David and to Solomon and to Israel his people. 11 Thus Solomon finished the house of the LORD and the king's house. All that Solomon had planned to do in the house of the LORD and in his own house he successfully accomplished.

This great assembly was sent home. And then The Lord appeared to Solomon and spoke to him.  But we should back up a bit to notice:

1.  The Temple was finished.

2Chronicles 5:1 Thus all the work that Solomon did for the house of the LORD was finished. And Solomon brought in the things that David his father had dedicated, and stored the silver, the gold, and all the vessels in the treasuries of the house of God.

2.  Solomon assembled the people.

2Chronicles 5:2-3 Then Solomon assembled the elders of Israel and all the heads of the tribes, the leaders of the fathers' houses of the people of Israel, in Jerusalem, to bring up the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of the city of David, which is Zion. 3 And all the men of Israel assembled before the king at the feast that is in the seventh month

3.  The Ark of the Covenant was brought into the Holy of Holies.

2Chronicles 5:4-7 And all the elders of Israel came, and the Levites took up the ark. 5 And they brought up the ark, the tent of meeting, and all the holy vessels that were in the tent; the Levitical priests brought them up. 6 And King Solomon and all the congregation of Israel, who had assembled before him, were before the ark, sacrificing so many sheep and oxen that they could not be counted or numbered. 7 Then the priests brought the ark of the covenant of the LORD to its place, in the inner sanctuary of the house, in the Most Holy Place, underneath the wings of the cherubim.

4  A song of praise was raised.

2Chronicles 5:11-13 And when the priests came out of the Holy Place (for all the priests who were present had consecrated themselves, without regard to their divisions, 12 and all the Levitical singers, Asaph, Heman, and Jeduthun, their sons and kinsmen, arrayed in fine linen, with cymbals, harps, and lyres, stood east of the altar with 120 priests who were trumpeters; 13 and it was the duty of the trumpeters and singers to make themselves heard in unison in praise and thanksgiving to the LORD), and when the song was raised,

5. The Glory (the Presence) of the Lord filled His house.
2Chronicles 5:13-14
and when the song was raised, with trumpets and cymbals and other musical instruments, in praise to the LORD, “For he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever,” the house, the house of the LORD, was filled with a cloud, 14 so that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud, for the glory of the LORD filled the house of God.

I started this article quoting 2Chronicles 714 (and 15). It has been a popularly quoted scripture for decades. I first heard it before I was saved. A ministry known as Up With People begun in 1965 made it famous. It is an important verse. But as I came to see when viewing the interview with Todd Smith on Revival Radio TV {via Youtube) we have not altogether (as ONE NEW MAN; as the ONE church Jesus is building) understood the way of The Lord surrounding this one verse.

One verse is just not enough. I have not been a zealous student of the Lord or his Bible. But around 2001 I discovered computers in the public library. I was astonished at how easily I could electronically search out the few verses that I knew. In too many less than zealous years I did manage to know more verses. To make a long story short I have seen for sometime that one verse of a chapter does not have the same spiritual impact as the whole chapter.  Here is someething I am finding more than helpful in understanding the Bible, and in learning from and knowing the Lord Jesus (Mat 11:28-30) : “Context Context Context.”  It is very true and important to know what precedes and what follows your favorite verses. There are I fear many, many people preaching insufficiently complete and sometime false ideas that they would abandon if they would study the context of the verses they now misunderstand. I often spoken from only partial knowledge. And I have had  completely erroneous ideas about some verses.

Much what we need to understand is actually not very technical. From the building and the “opening” Solomon Temple we can observe some things that we may not have seen as important.

Israel at this time was perhaps as strong as it would be in its past history. Solomon, although he would later fail, was leading well because of his humility.

2Chronicles 1:7-13 In that night God appeared to Solomon, and said to him, “Ask what I shall give you.” 8 And Solomon said to God, “You have shown great and steadfast love to David my father, and have made me king in his place. 9 O LORD God, let your word to David my father be now fulfilled, for you have made me king over a people as numerous as the dust of the earth. 10 Give me now wisdom and knowledge to go out and come in before this people, for who can govern this people of yours, which is so great?” 11 God answered Solomon, “Because this was in your heart, and you have not asked for possessions, wealth, honor, or the life of those who hate you, and have not even asked for long life, but have asked for wisdom and knowledge for yourself that you may govern my people over whom I have made you king, 12 wisdom and knowledge are granted to you. I will also give you riches, possessions, and honor, such as none of the kings had who were before you, and none after you shall have the like.” 13 So Solomon came from the high place at Gibeon, from before the tent of meeting, to Jerusalem. And he reigned over Israel.

God answered his prayer and Solomon had the support of Israel. He was able to command the building of the Temple. He was able to gather all Israel to have it dedicated. He assembled the elders of Israel to bring in “the ark, the tent of meeting, and all the holy vessels that were in the tent.“

This properly respected the pattern designated by the Mosaic Law. Solomon wanted representatives of the entire kingdom to witness the event, but not at the expense of disobedience to God’s command. ~David Guzik

2Chronicles 5:2-5 Then Solomon assembled the elders of Israel and all the heads of the tribes, the leaders of the fathers' houses of the people of Israel, in Jerusalem, to bring up the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of the city of David, which is Zion. 3 And all the men of Israel assembled before the king at the feast that is in the seventh month. 4 And all the elders of Israel came, and the Levites took up the ark. 5 And they brought up the ark, the tent of meeting, and all the holy vessels that were in the tent; the Levitical priests brought them up.

Solomon’s humility and obedience along with the humility and obedience of the whole of Israel resulted in the Lord to powerfully reveal His presence to the whole assembly twice! ~ 2Chronicles 5:14; 2Chronicles 7:1-3

And after this He appears to Solomon !!!

2Chronicles 7:12-16 And Jehovah appeared to Solomon by night, and said unto him, I have heard thy prayer, and have chosen this place to myself for a house of sacrifice. 13 If I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or if I command the locust to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among my people; 14 if my people, who are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. 15 Now mine eyes shall be open, and mine ears attent, unto the prayer that is made in this place. 16 For now have I chosen and hallowed this house, that my name may be there for ever; and mine eyes and my heart shall be there perpetually.

And that is where we want to be yes? In a place, in the House, the community the congregation, a place such as this hallowed Temple, where God's name will be forever and his eyes, and His heart will be there perpetually, a place where we are confident that He will see and hear us.

And now in the Lord Jesus Christ we are a spiritual house built of living stones. Where two or more of these living stones are gathered…

For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. Matthew 18:20

The blessing and the benefit of the two or three must certainly extend to the 10, the 50, the 100…  to the entire church, yes? “Thy Kingdom come” is a prayer for ALL Christ’s brethren to pray, yes? It is a prayer for the us to live in the presence of the King. And Jesus is the King.

1John 1:1-10 That which was from the beginning, that which we have heard, that which we have seen with our eyes, that which we beheld, and our hands handled, concerning the Word of life 2 (and the life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and declare unto you the life, the eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us); 3 that which we have seen and heard declare we unto you also, that ye also may have fellowship with us: yea, and our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ: 4 and these things we write, that our joy may be made full. 5 And this is the message which we have heard from him and announce unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say that we have fellowship with him and walk in the darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: 7 but if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanseth us from all sin. 8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

One added note, as I put two verses together last night, and one this morning and they can be joined to this article. It is pretty clear that Solomon's Temple took A LOT of work to build. It took A LOT of work to dedicate. It would take a lot of work to maintain going forward. And all this work was done for the purpose of being in God's presence. But now WE are the Temple.

Ephesians 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God afore prepared that we should walk in them.

Philippians 2:12-13 So then, my beloved, even as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; 13 for it is God who worketh in you both to will and to work, for his good pleasure.

John 6:28-29 They said therefore unto him, What must we do, that we may work the works of God? 29 Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.

What must WE do? Believe that WE are God's workmanship. Accept and rejoice in the work WE are called to do. And know that it is not rocket science. We simple believe on, WE have faith in, WE trust God as His PEOPLE, His FAMILY, His FELLOWSHIP.

1Chronicles 16:28-29 Give to the Lord, O you families of the peoples, give to the Lord glory and strength. 29 Give to the Lord the glory due his name; take with you an offering and come before him; give worship to the Lord in holy robes.

The Jewish Question

The Jewish Question

SOME ARE ANGRY THAT American christians love and comfort the Jews. Some American christians hate the Jews. Church history has no shortage of bloody persecutions of the Jews carried out by those who called themselves christians. No doubt much of the world hates the Jews. And much of that hatred is done in IGNORANCE of God's unstoppable plan.
Who are the Jews that the world hates? And who are the Jews that "christians" hate? Who are the Jews that some christians love? Jews are the posterity of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Jacob had a son named Judah. From the tribe of Judah came King David. From his line came Mary the virgin who bore the Messiah, the King of the Jews, the Lord of all and savior of all who believe.
(Don't comment about DNA Jewish and non-Jewish. If you in this world are fearless enough to identify as Jewish > DNA not required > you will be hated and may be killed.)
And yes, if you are a Jew who believes Yeshua to be the Messiah, the Son of the Living God, your own Lord and Savior, it may be that the religious Jews will hate you! and worse!
“They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the hour cometh, that whosoever killeth you shall think that he offereth service unto God. And these things will they do, because they have not known the Father, nor me.” (John 16:2-3)
And in like manner so called christians have excommunicated faithful believers and even murdered/martyred them. Read Foxes Book of Martyrs.
Those who complain bitterly that some in Christ's church love the Jewish people and comfort them should look up the meaning of comfort in Biblical Hebrew and Greek. This comfort is not about giving them billions of dollars and weapons. It is about bringing them the good news that Jesus is truly their own Messiah (anointed King)!!!
Where do we find Jesus instructing His followers to hate ANYONE?
“If any man cometh unto me, and hateth not his own father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.” (Luk 14:26)
What? He does? Yes, this you must do in order to qualify as a disciple of the Lord. If you do not hate them you will follow them. Some have said that here "hate" means to "love less." How much less? Read Pilgrim's Progress by Bunyan.
Jesus' disciples are to follow Him above and before all others. If we do not love Jesus first with all our heart, soul, mind and strength we will love people who cannot love us, care for us, give to us and save us. Only Jesus has the words of eternal life, the power of an endless life. To love and honor and obey Jesus it is necessary to put Jesus in the highest place of our life, of our being. That will be far above all others and all things. And yet this will bring us close to our families and the church, close in The Spirit of God. God is Love!
Before you dare to hate the Jews, hate your "own father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and [your] own life also."
Before we become Jesus disciples we do not know how to love as He loves. Jesus Kingdom of Love (God IS Love) has been called an "upside down Kingdom" because it operates in and with a Love we in the corrupted flesh cannot understand as anything but the opposite of our own carnal self referential love. God is to us as a foriegner speaking a language (Love) that we cannot understand until we are BORN AGAIN FROM ABOVE. We must abandon the carnality of our natural birth and life. we must receive from God above a spiritual birth of faith in God leading to a spiritual growth into Godly maturity.
A feature of Jesus' "upside down" way is that we are to love our enemies!
“Ye have heard that it was said, Thou shalt love thy neighbor, and hate thine enemy: but I say unto you, Love your enemies, and pray for them that persecute you; that ye may be sons of your Father who is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sendeth rain on the just and the unjust. For if ye love them that love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the Gentiles the same? Ye therefore shall be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” (Mat 5:43-48)
“But love your enemies, and do them good, and lend, never despairing; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be sons of the Most High: for he is kind toward the unthankful and evil. Be ye merciful, even as your Father is merciful.” (Luk 6:35-36)
The "Jewish Question" has an answer. Love the Jews! I'm not saying to approve or condone their sins. But love them even if you see them as your enemy. IF YOU LOVE THE JEWS SOME OF THEM WILL SEE THE SAME LOVE THAT JESUS HAS FOR THEM. THE FAITH, LOVE AND SALVATION OF GENTILE BELIEVERS IS INTENDED TO PROVOKE THE JEWS TO JEALOUSY!
“I say then, Did they (THE JEWS) stumble that they might fall? God forbid: but by their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, to provoke them to jealousy.” (Rom 11:11)
Few read the Bible with the guidance of the Holy Spirit. If they did they would understand that God's plan is far different than their own understanding.
“For it is my desire, brothers, that this secret may be clear to you, so that you may not have pride in your knowledge, that Israel has been made hard in part, till all the Gentiles have come in; And so all Israel will get salvation: as it is said in the holy Writings, There will come out of Zion the One who makes free; by him wrongdoing will be taken away from Jacob: And this is my agreement with them, when I will take away their sins. As far as the good news is in question, they are cut off from God on account of you, but as far as the selection is in question, they are loved on account of the fathers. Because God's selection and his mercies may not be changed. For as you, in time past, were not under the rule of God, but now have got mercy through their turning away, So in the same way these have gone against the orders of God, so that by the mercy given to you they may now get mercy. For God has let them all go against his orders, so that he might have mercy on them all. O how deep is the wealth of the wisdom and knowledge of God! no one is able to make discovery of his decisions, and his ways may not be searched out. Who has knowledge of the mind of the Lord? or who has taken part in his purposes? Or who has first given to him, and it will be given back to him again? For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things. To him be the glory for ever. So be it.” (Rom 11:25-36)

Jesus the Master Teacher Instructs

Rich men? Beggars? Hunger? Torment? Abraham's bosom? Moses? Rising from the dead?

Luke 16:19-31

19 Now there was a certain rich man, and he was clothed in purple and fine linen, faring sumptuously every day:

20 and a certain beggar named Lazarus was laid at his gate, full of sores,

21 and desiring to be fed with the crumbs that fell from the rich man's table; yea, even the dogs came and licked his sores.

22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and that he was carried away by the angels into Abraham's bosom: and the rich man also died, and was buried.

23 And in Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am in anguish in this flame.

25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things: but now here he is comforted, and thou art in anguish.

26 And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, that they that would pass from hence to you may not be able, and that none may cross over from thence to us.

27 And he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house;

28 for I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.

29 But Abraham saith, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.

30 And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one go to them from the dead, they will repent.

31 And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, if one rise from the dead.

The following is a brief outline of the story of the rich man and Lazarus:

1. The rich man never lacked for anything. He had the best of everything EVERY DAY.

2. Lazarus, a beggar, had as close to nothing as one could have and remain alive. His health was wretched as he was full of sores.

3. Lazarus was “laid at his (the rich man’s) gate.” Laid by some who would wish the rich man to help him? Possibly.

4. Lazarus died and was carried by angels to Abraham’s bosom. 5. The rich man was buried and found himself in Hades, in torments and “in this flame.”

6. The rich man appeals to Abraham for water. He has become a beggar. Why? For having riches?

7. Lazarus is now comforted. Why? For being destitute?

8. Abraham explains that he and Lazarus they are separated by a great and impassible gulf purposed to keep those in each place forever separated.

9. The rich man appeals on behalf of his five brothers still alive, that Lazarus be sent to warn them, that they might not suffer as he is now suffering.

10. Abraham tells him that his brothers have Moses to whom they are to listen.

11. The rich man counters that if one (Lazarus) were raised from the dead to warn them his brothers would be persuaded.

12. Abraham’s final word to the rich man:
“If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, if one rise from the dead.”

Apart from possessing great wealth what kind of a man was the rich man? The scripture does not accuse him of anything explicitly sinful. It says merely that he was rich, well dressed and ate well (was “faring sumptuously”) every day. Yet when he died he was not taken to a place of comfort; he was taken to a place of tournament, flame and undoubtedly a place without any water at all. Why? What does this say of him?

Apart from being a beggar, being "full of sores,” and wanting for food, what kind of man was Lazarus? The scripture does not accuse Lazarus of anything explicitly sinful. Nor does it credit him with any particular character of or deeds of righteousness. Nevertheless, when he died he went to Abraham bosom, a place comfort. Why was he carried away there? What does this say of him?

And also, What is Abraham’s bosom which is mentioned only here in Luke Ch.16. Is it a real place?

I believe it is a real place. I believe the rich man and Lazarus were real people. Abraham is certainly a real person. The rich man has a conversation with Abraham. The story is told by the Lord Jesus, Son of the Living God. Would Jesus make up a story about a fictional Abraham? If Abraham is not a real person, then is Moses, whom Abraham mentioned also not a real person? I believe they are both real, that Abraham’s bosom is a real place where the saved of the Jews were (are?) kept until the end of the age.

Jesus told the disciples “Verily I say unto you, that ye who have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit on the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.” Is this in the millennial Kingdom? I think so. If the disciple will be present with Jesus on His throne of Glory, judging the tribes of Israel it only makes sense that the saints of the Old Testament period with be there also. Matthew 19:28

Additionally I see no reason not to believe that this Lazarus is the Lazarus that Jesus raised from the dead. Harmonies of the Gospel place the raising of Lazarus (John 11:1-44) just after Luke 17:10, a mere 10 verses from the end of the story of the rich man, and just before Luke 17:11 when Jesus again begins giving instructions.

This account is preceded by more than a few parables. Many people were coming to hear Jesus. His disciples were with him. And some number of the Pharisees were listening too. Luke 13:22 to Luke 17:10 is labeled “Instructions” on various topics in Ariel’s Harmony of the Gospels. Jesus is teaching. Luke chapter 16 is headed under the label "Instruction Concerning Wealth." Many people remark to day that Jesus taught about money (wealth, mammon) a lot. Some even say and teach that he taught more about money than any other subject. That's really not true. Everything Jesus taught about had some direct or indirect relation to the Kingdom of God and eternal life. He did talk/teach about money much. But his instructions regarding money would be better seen as instructions regarding covetousness, greed and avarice as opposed to humble giving and generosity. It is, after all, the love of money that leads to evil doing. The righteous use of money can do much good. If the rich man (in the true story) had used his wealth to bless and heal the poor and the sickly he would have been carried to Abraham’s bosom too.

Someone said, “Do your givin’ while you’re livin’ so you’re knowin’ where it’s goin’.”

Luke 12:16-21

16 And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully:

17 and he reasoned within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have not where to bestow my fruits?

18 And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my grain and my goods.

19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, be merry.

20 But God said unto him, Thou foolish one, this night is thy soul required of thee; and the things which thou hast prepared, whose shall they be?

21 So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God. >>>---

Luke 12:22-40

22 And he said unto his disciples, THEREFORE I say unto you, Be not anxious for your life, what ye shall eat; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on.

23 For the life is more than the food, and the body than the raiment.

24 Consider the ravens, that they sow not, neither reap; which have no store-chamber nor barn; and God feedeth them: of how much more value are ye than the birds!

25 And which of you by being anxious can add a cubit unto the measure of his life?

26 If then ye are not able to do even that which is least, why are ye anxious concerning the rest?

27 Consider the lilies, how they grow: they toil not, neither do they spin; yet I say unto you, Even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

28 But if God doth so clothe the grass in the field, which to-day is, and to-morrow is cast into the oven; how much more shall he clothe you, O ye of little faith?

29 And seek not ye what ye shall eat, and what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind.

30 For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: but your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things.

31 Yet seek ye his kingdom, and these things shall be added unto you.

32 Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.

33 Sell that which ye have, and give alms; make for yourselves purses which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief draweth near, neither moth destroyeth.

34 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

35 Let your loins be girded about, and your lamps burning;

36 and be ye yourselves like unto men looking for their lord, when he shall return from the marriage feast; that, when he cometh and knocketh, they may straightway open unto him.

37 Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them sit down to meat, and shall come and serve them.

38 And if he shall come in the second watch, and if in the third, and find them so, blessed are those servants.

39 But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what hour the thief was coming, he would have watched, and not have left his house to be broken through.

40 Be ye also ready: for in an hour that ye think not the Son of man cometh.
